| What does this product do?
It enables a UNIX system to easily send and receive Internet e-mail using SMTP and POP3 standards, eliminating the need for sendmail, mmdf or uucp. It also includes both SMTP and POP3 servers for connecting PCs and other systems to Internet e-mail through the UNIX Internet connection. It provides a powerful, flexible, easier-to-use and much less expensive alternative to PC-based mail server products like Microsoft Exchange.
How does it work?
The FineLine Internet MailServer makes the UNIX system look like a "regular" PC e-mail package to the Internet Service Provider (ISP) so it can use a standard Internet PC account, yet still supports multiple users receiving e-mail in the same mailbox. Here's an overview of its features:
- Enables having an entire company send and retrieve Internet e-mail with a single Internet account
- Addition and deletion of users is all done locally, without requiring any contact with the ISP or changing any mailbox names
- Provides the functionality of the system mail program without the setup and maintenance headaches
- Includes SMTP & POP3 servers for connecting PCs and other systems to the FineLine Internet MailServer, enabling them to access Internet e-mail through the UNIX Internet connection
- Works transparently with the FineLine Message Manager, or any UNIX e-mail interface program
- Includes a basic e-mail filtering system for weeding out unwanted e-mail messages
- Includes a POP mailbox maintenance program that enables accessing a mailbox on the Internet interactively. This feature enables viewing and printing message headers or entire messages, and deleting any combination of messages without having to download them to your system (a great way to delete a message with a known virus before it gets to your system).
- Enables attaching multiple files to a message with MIME BASE64 from a command-line
- Includes an "auto-attendant" feature that can automatically detach and process data files attached to incoming messages
- Supports multiple domain names on the same system and multiple Internet POP e-mail accounts
- Handles incoming & outgoing system mail functions including returning mail with an announcement, auto forwarding, return-receipt, user name mapping and more
- Takes only minutes to install and configure
What new features were added in version 2.1?
- Authenticated SMTP server support
- Some smaller enhancements & adjustments
What new features were added in version 2.0?
- A much more robust mail server engine
- New POP mailbox maintenance program (flmail -pm) enables accessing a mailbox on the Internet interactively. Now you can view and print message headers or entire messages, and delete any combination of messages without having to download them to your system. This is an invaluable tool when problem messages clog your mailbox.
- New auto-cancellation of messages to invalid e-mail addresses and auto local mail re-delivery avoids mail backup.
- New 'clean' command intelligently removes any leftover temporary files.
- Improved SMTP program senses when queued messages are already in progress, eliminating the possibility of duplicate outgoing messages.
- The special features of version 1.5 are now standard in 2.0 - namely, the ability to attach files as MIME BASE64 from a prompt, and the powerful auto-attendant function (enables automatically detaching an attachment and running a specified UNIX command to process the file).
- The scheduler will now automatically restart in the event the system is shut down while the scheduler was processing mail.
- Incoming messages with attachments forwarded to the postmaster due to an invalid address can now be forwarded to the proper user with the attachments intact.
- New command line PC-compatible return-receipt option supports a read receipt (versus a delivery receipt).
- New junk e-mail filter options add even more flexibility in weeding out bothersome and often inappropriate unsolicited messages. Also, a new 'save to file' option adds the ability to re-route certain messages to a different folder file.
- Totally re-written 'domail' command eliminates leftover lockfile issues and adds the option of receiving status messages only when an error occurs.
- New 'flmail -log' command displays the last 'domail' log.
- A multitude of smaller enhancements...

- POP/SMTP e-mail account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP)

- Either a registered Domain Name with Virtual Domain Support from the ISP (so all incoming messages for a domain name are placed into one POP3 mailbox which you will regularly retrieve your mail from) or the ISP forwards each incoming message directly to the MailServer's SMTP server for local delivery (requires your UNIX server to be running 24/7)
What UNIX platforms are supported?
- SCO OpenServer 5
- SCO UnixWare 7
- Linux
- IBM AIX
