| What does this product do?
It provides UNIX / Linux commands to:
- Transfer a UNIX file to a PC, run a PC program to open it, then wait for the PC program to finish and transfer the resulting file back to UNIX for processing / saving
- Exchange data directly with any network program listening on a socket (IP / port)
- Only send a file to a PC, only retrieve a file from a PC, only run a PC command, or any combination
How does it work?
It includes both UNIX and Windows software, with a UNIX command for specifying what PC to contact, the (optional) UNIX file to transfer and where to place it on the PC, the (optional) PC command to run and wait for, the name of the PC file the program will create / update, and the name of the UNIX file to receive the results.
A second UNIX command enables sending a file to a socket and having the response written to a UNIX file, or vice versa (first read, then write). This greatly simplifies processing a transaction with a networking-based program since you only need to specify what server to contact and the input / output file names.
The commands do not require any user interaction, so they can be executed from within another application for transparent operation.
What are some examples of possible uses?
- Open a UNIX comma-delimited file on a PC in Excel, wait for Excel to close, then have the updated file moved back to UNIX - all with one command
- Store PC-edited files centrally on the server so only a single copy exists of each document
- Run any specialty Windows software (ex: shipping, payment, communication, etc) and have it easily integrated with your existing UNIX database
- Retrieve a file from a PC to the UNIX server ("pull" a file versus "pushing")
What is the hardware configuration requirement?
This software requires that all PCs to use the product be connected to the UNIX server over a local TCP/IP network or VPN. Note that the PCs must either have static IP addresses on the network or use the FineLine PC Tether or Samba software to determine the dynamic IP address.
What UNIX platforms are supported?
